SPRING 2003 HIKING EVENT LOG

Saturday, June 28 Five hikers walker along the ridge top near the park border on the North Carolina side of the Smokies. They hiked approximately 12 miles on the Cataloochee Divide and Hemphill Bald Trails. Althouth the trail was very overgrown in places, the views from these two trails into Maggie Valley were well worth the effort.

Sunday, June 22 On a beautiful summer morning, five club members hiked about ten miles near the state line between Del Rio and Hot Springs. The group started at the Wolf Creek Church and walked up the old road to Wolf Creek Falls, one of the most scenic waterfalls in East Tennessee. The water levels were high and the group encountered four wet creek crossings, but the trip was very worthwhile.

Saturday, June 21 Three hikers did a ten mile mystery hike on the Appalachian Trail near Erwin from the Nolichucky River Rafting Center north toward Indian Grave Gap.

June 14-15 Eight persons drove to Cumberland Falls in Kentucky for a river rafting trip on the Cumberland River below the falls. After a five mile section of Class III water, the group was picked up by a boat for a dinner cruise down the river to Cumberland Lake. After the boat ride, the group drove to Renfro Valley. The whole weekend was very wet and the group, again, missed viewing the MoonBow. After spending a soggy night in cabins, the group did a beautiful hike along the bluffs above both Cumberland and Eagle Falls on Sunday.

Sunday, June 9 Seven hikers climbed up the logging trail from Mt. Olivet Road to the old Yellow Springs Hotel Complex then continued climbing to the Meadow Creek Mountain Trail. Turning north, the group hiked to the terminus of the trai on the Cedar Creek Cave Road for a total of about 8 miles.

Wednesday, June 4 Eight Wednesday Walkers took a stroll on the Tusculum Track.

Monday, May 26 Six hikers did a Memorial Day Loop hike on the Relocated AT section on Camp Creek Bald. The Rhododendron was blooming making for a very beautiful hike.

May 23-25 Seven backpackers took a boat ferry from Fontana to Hazel Creek and hiked 25 miles on the Lakeshore Trail, spending two nights enroute and exiting at the tunnel on the Road to Nowhere.

Sunday, May 18 Six hikers did the moderate trip to Sill Creek Falls on the Clark's Creek Road off the Erwin Highway.

Saturday, May 17 Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia had nine representatives from the Greeneville Hiking Club. The festival was much larger than ever before and many area outfitters were present along with manufacturere and food vendors. The hikers parade was as wild as usual with several hundred thru hikers marching.

Saturday, May 10 Six hikers drove to the trailhead near the Overmountain Barn on the Appalachian Trail at Roan Mountain and hiked up the summit of Hump Mountain. The vistas and wildflowers were overwhelming as usual.

Sunday, May 4 Five club members rode bikes for about twelve miles on the road adjacent to the French Broad River in Del Rio.

Saturday, May 3 Six hikers left the Cosby Campground and trudged six miles straight up on the Snake Den Trail The group then turned north on the Appalachian Trail for three very scenic miles before returning to the campground on the Low Gap Trail. High altitude wildflowers were in full array and a beautiful, but unidentified white flowering tree dotted the hillsides giving the appearance of sheep grazing or rock formations.

Sunday, April 27 Five hikers checked out the Little Paint Creek Trail close to the campground. This camping area appear be be almost ready to reopen.

Saturday, April 26 Eight members of the Greeneville Hiking Club participated in the M-S Walk at Tusculum College. The group then hiked to the Squibb Creek Waterfall in Horse Creek. The dwarf crested Iris were in full display along with several other wildflowers.

Saturday, April 19 Ten wildflower lovers hiked about five miles on the Porter's Creek Trail in the Greenbrier Section of the Smokies. The trilium and fringed phacelia were slightly past their peak but there were still vivid displays of wild geraniums, bishop cap and many others. Several dwarf ginseng were identified.

Wednesday, April 16 We had a Wednesday Walker record of 13 hikers on the Little Paint Creek Trail behind the campground at Moses Turn.

Sunday, April 13 Eight hikers did the five mile Jennings Creek Loop. High water forced the group to wade nearly all the crossings on Big Jennings Creek. There was a vivid display of white trilium on the lower part of the Little Jennings Creek Trail.

Saturday, April 12 We had a small turnout and decided to do the zoo trip at a later time. Five club members attended the Trailfest in Hot Springs, N.C.

Sunday, April 6 Seven hikers did the loop on Camp Creek Bald, hiking on the present AT and also the soon to be opened Relocation across the ridgetop. The group almost made it back to the van before the storm hit.

Saturday, April 5 After a rain delay of two hours, five bicycle riders rode from Hot Springs to Dudley Falls and back. The fire pinks were in full bloom along the French Broad River and the red buds were also at their peak.

Wednesday, April 2 Five Wednesday Walkers took a stroll on the Tusculum Track.
