Saturday, March 13. We finally got to do the "Search for Greene County's Highest Point" hike although the road to Camp Creek Bald was still very icy. Five club members took an altimeter reading beneath the tower above Jones Meadow, then hiked about six and a half miles north on the Appalachian Trail. The group made a short, off-trail climb to the summit of Gravel Knob and took another reading there. Then they hiked back to the tower for a final check of the instrument. From these readings, we determined that the highest point in the county is Camp Creek Bald and not Gravel Knob.
